Meaning
Opening Doha 1: With the dust of my Guru's lotus feet I clean the mirror of my mind, and I sing the spotless glory of Rama, best of the Raghus, who grants the four aims of life.
Opening Doha 2: Knowing myself to be lacking in wisdom, I remember you, son of the wind. Give me strength, understanding and learning, and take away my troubles and faults.
Glory to you, Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue. Glory to you, lord of the monkeys, whose light fills the three worlds.
You are Rama's messenger, a home of matchless strength, known as Anjani's son and the son of the wind.
Great hero, mighty and as firm as a thunderbolt, you drive away wrong thinking and keep company with good sense.
Golden in colour and beautifully dressed, you wear earrings and have curling hair.
A thunderbolt and a banner shine in your hands, and a sacred thread of munja grass rests on your shoulder.
Born of Shiva's grace and beloved son of Kesari, your brilliance and courage are honoured across the world.
Learned, virtuous and very clever, you are always eager to do Rama's work.
You delight in hearing the Lord's stories, and Rama, Lakshmana and Sita live in your heart.
In a tiny form you appeared before Sita; in a fearsome form you set Lanka ablaze.
Taking a huge form, you destroyed the demons and carried out Rama's tasks.
You brought the Sanjivani herb and revived Lakshmana, and Rama joyfully embraced you.
Rama praised you warmly and said, “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.”
“A thousand mouths sing your glory,” said Rama, and drew you close to his chest.
Sanaka and the other sages, Brahma and the gods, Narada, Saraswati and the serpent king Shesha —
Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions — even poets and scholars cannot fully describe your greatness.
You helped Sugriva by bringing him to Rama, and so he regained his kingdom.
Vibhishana heeded your counsel and became king of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
The sun lay thousands of yojanas away, yet you swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.
Carrying Rama's ring in your mouth, you leapt across the ocean — no wonder at all.
Every hard task in the world becomes easy by your grace.
You guard the door of Rama's court; no one enters without your leave.
Those who take refuge in you find every happiness; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear.
Only you can hold your own great power; at your roar the three worlds tremble.
Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near when the name of Mahavira is spoken.
The verse says illness and pain fade for those who keep chanting Hanuman's name.
Hanuman frees from troubles those who remember him in thought, word and deed.
Rama is king over all ascetics, and you carry out all his tasks.
Whoever comes to you with any other wish receives the fullest fruit of life.
Your glory spans all four ages and shines brightly and famously across the world.
You guard saints and sages, destroy the demons, and are dear to Rama.
You can grant the eight siddhis and nine nidhis, a boon Mother Janaki gave you.
You hold the elixir of Rama's name, and you remain forever Raghupati's servant.
Through devotion to you one reaches Rama, and the sorrows of many births are forgotten.
At life's end the devotee reaches Rama's abode, where they are known as Hari's devotee.
Even without turning the mind to other deities, serving Hanuman brings every happiness.
Troubles end and all pain is erased for those who remember mighty Hanuman.
Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman! Be gracious to us as a guru would be.
Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great joy.
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains fulfilment, and Shiva, lord of Gauri, is witness.
Tulsidas, forever Hari's servant, prays: “Lord, make your home in my heart.”
Closing Doha: Son of the wind, remover of troubles, embodiment of auspiciousness — dwell in my heart together with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, best among the gods.
